Last weekend, my parents and I flew to southern Peru into a city named Arequipa - Peru's second largest city. Also known as the White City for two reasons - first, many of the buildings are made from white volcanic ash, but most of the original founders of the city were European, with lighter skin.It's very much like Cusco, Peru with its traditional central plaza/meeting place, but surrounding Arequipa are three volcanoes; one inactive and the other two active. Unfortunately for us, the snow from the winter had already melted so the photo opportunities weren't the best.
The city is nearly 8,000 feet above sea level so it took a day or two for our lungs to get used to the reduced oxygen. You definitely feel it after walking uphill for a short period of time - becoming out of breath and needing to stop for a bit.
