For my last excursion in Peru before flying to the US for the Christmas holidays, I chose Lunahuana. Known for its outdoor activities, including whitewater rafting and off-roading, it's also home to Incahuasi, which houses some of Peru's most famous Inca ruins. The bus ride was only two hours, leaving early in the morning to allow as much time as possible to spend outside.
Before arriving in Lunahuana, we made a quick pit stop at a local beach, where we saw some sea lions relaxing nearby an old fishing village and then took a run through a local winery where we tasted both wine and pisco - enough to get a good buzz going!
Before lunch, we headed to the water for an 8-kilometer rafting experience down the CaƱete river. We were told these were Class IV rapids, but they were not as dangerous as I anticipated them to be. Following lunch (where we were treated to delicious, locally caught freshwater crayfish), we headed to the local hills for some 4x4 off-roading through trails made especially for this.
Even though we had just entered into spring, the sun was very strong and I ended up getting a nice burn on my neck and forehead, but it was definitely worth it! For more photos, click here.
