Colectivos (or buses) are an affordable and efficient means of transportation throughout Argentina. Colectivos in Buenos Aires cost no more than one peso (33 cents) to travel from one end of the city to the other. Compare this to a US $10 to $15 cab ride and you can see why this mode of transportation is so popular.
To truly experience the popularity of a colectivo, one must board a busy line during rush hour when people are packed in like sardines. More and more commonly, starting in Cordoba and spreading into many other cities including Buenos Aires, male colectivo riders have taken advantage of the close quarters to get intimite with their neighboring female passengers, resulting in numerous complaints of sexual harrassment and making media headlines at the same time. In order to publicize the intolerance of unwanted public intimacy on these colectivos, some local women's organizations are posting signs that can be easily interpreted by a non-Spanish speaker that forbids this type of behavior on the colectivos. Translates, this sign says, "We don't want your support," which is a play on words, since the verb "apoyar" also means "to lean on."
