Fire at the Ecological Reserve

I left work early last Friday and Gabi (who is not working) and I headed to the ecological reserve - one of my favorite retreats in Buenos Aires. It is an oasis just outside of the city where nature is protected, there are no cars, and the only traffic is caused by bikes on a Saturday afternoon. Well, we were about 1/2 way through the reserve, near the river, when a car sped by honking its horn. This was highly unusual since vehicles are prohibited from entering the reserve. About an hour later, we left the park and were walking in Costanera Sur along the road to have a beer when a huge cloud of smoke was visible in the park. That night we watched the news on TV where it was reported that it took 15 fire trucks to put the fire out and that dozens of acres of the reserve were charred.

I biked there yesterday and saw the damage firsthand - it was quite horrible. Unfortunately the fire was probably caused by humans. Argentines love to smoke and the reserve is littered with old cigarette butts. What a shame.
