Five hours south of Lima along the Panamericano highway brings one to Ica, Peru. Ica is known for its production of pisco and some of the best Peruvian wines. Fifteen minutes outside of Ica is Huacachina, a literal oasis in the center of a huge desert stretching dozens of miles. Getting to the top of the sand dunes is easy. You hop into a dune buggy that takes you on a 50 mile an hour race up and down the dunes, twisting and turning andm thinking the dune buggy's going to flip (thankfully, it didn't).
After speeding our way to the top, we hopped out, grabbed our sand boards (think surfboarding but in the sand) for a few hours of an adrenalin rush. There was no need to climb back to the top, since the driver of the dune buggy picked us up once everyone made it to the bottom and drove us to another, more challenging dune.
At the bottom of the dunes is a beautiful lagoon with restaurants, a beach and a handful of hotels for those who want to return to the dunes first thing the next morning. For more photos from this exciting trip, click here.
