Carnaval Correntino 2014!

 

Taking advantage of the long President's Day weekend, I journeyed to Corrientes, Argentina (just a few miles drive from the border of Paraguay) on an 11-hour overnight bus ride to partake in the city's annual Carnaval. It's one of the largest in Argentina and attracts tens of thousands of spectators and hundreds of participants dressed to the nines in traditional outfits made of brightly colored feathers and outrageously skimpy outfits.

The party takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from mid-February through mid-March during the same time much of the rest of Latin America celebrates. The party kicks off around 10 pm when the music starts, and by 3 am it's fully underway. The final participants don't make it to the end of the long runway until 5 am, by which time the sun is nearly rising.

The weather was perfect (90's during the day and a crisp 75 or so at night), making it an ideal trip for a long weekend. To see more pictures from this most recent excursion, click here.
