Just behind Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires' newest neighborhood, sits Costanera Sur and the Ecological Reserve. It is a plot of hundreds of acres of land next to the river in a protected zone, so flora and fauna flourish here. Early in the 20th century the land was set aside as open space by the government for sunbathing and picnicing, but in the late 1960's the area was filled with sediment in an attempt to create new lands along the river. The project was abandoned and since then, the birds returned, bringing with them seeds from native vegetation. Additionally, other wildlife such as iguanas and a variety of small rodents and mammals have returned as well. The government has built bike and walking paths on the perimeter of the reserve, but the interior is "human free," ensuring the reserve remains protected. On any given weekend in the spring/summer, the reserve attracts hundreds of locals and tourists who want a quick escape from the noise and chaos of the city.
Because the weather was warm and sunny today, I took 1/2 day off from work and biked to the reserve this afternoon, taking the photos above and enjoying the outdoors on a Tuesday in Spring!
