For the long weekend last weekend (25 de Mayo is the anniversary of the first independent government in Buenos Aires), I booked a flight back to Montevideo, Uruguay. For some reason, I find the city rather charming and a nice getaway from Buenos Aires. The food is awesome there (think chivitos and fresh seafood) and the people are very "tranquilo."While the weather this time of year is usually somewhat chilly (60-70 during the day and in the 50's at night), by Saturday morning it was in the high 80's. Well the hotel had already turned off its central air conditioning for the summer season so the room was like an oven. After some nudging (and a request to be moved to a hotel with a/c), the manager upgraded me to an executive suite with a beautful view of the river and the city skyline. While there still wasn't any a/c, the large fan and the open windows cooled the room down pretty nicely in the evening.
The Uruguayan Presidential election is coming up soon, so the city was filled with political rallies and posters all over the place. On Sundays, a certain downtown street turns into a flea market where you can buy virtually anything - from bootleg CDs to clothing to animals (pure bred cocker spaniel puppies were being sold for just 200 pesos uruguayos - less than $10 USD).
