While watching an online video today, I saw an ad for an organization called Kiva, which provides loans to individuals and groups in some of the poorest areas of the world where banks would never consider lending. The premise is simple: Kiva solicits $25 or more "loans" from individuals who choose the entity they wish to support. Once the needed amount is raised, the entity is given the money along with a repayment schedule.Upon complete repayment of the loan, the $25 is then redeposited into the lender's PayPal where he/she can reclaim it or invest it in another worthy enterprise.
Having seen abject poverty in Paraguay, Peru, and even Argentina, I decided to loan four entities money - two in Peru and two in Bolivia. One recipient of my loan is an owner of a butcher shop in Peru, another is a taxi driver needing to make repairs to his car, and the other two (in Bolivia) are collectives sharing the loan to invest in their own stores.
