The fourth day of our family cruise brought us from Mykonos, Greece to Kusadasi, Turkey. Fortunately, the cruise ship prearranged for entry into Turkey so we didn't have to spend hours in line at immigration. The port city, Kusadasi, is the gateway to Ephesus, which is an archeological site that ranks among the top wonders of the world.
The first stop was to an ancient home that was the last home of the Virgin Mary before she died. It is so important to the Catholic church that both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict made pilgrimages here.
Following this was an extensive visit to the Great Theatre of Ephesus, dating back to 27 B.C. The excavated remains at this huge complex reflect centuries of history, from classical Greek to the Roman Empire – when it was the Mediterranean’s main commercial center – up to the spread of Christianity.
