After an overnight journey on the ship, having left from Turkey earlier in the day, we arrived at the last two islands of the cruise - Rhodes and Santorini. Known for its ancient ruins and remnants of its crusades-era occupation by the Knights of St. John. we visited the medieval Street of the Knights and the castle-like Palace of the Grand Masters, once a Turkish prison and now a museum. I split from my family after an hour or so in the historic city center and headed for the beach for some R&R.
Later that afternoon we re-boarded the cruise ship for our final destination before heading back to Athens - Santorini. Anyone who's seen pictures of the island of Santorini knows that, upon disembarking from the ship, there's only two ways to get to the village; by cable car or donkey. Online reports document the abuse the donkeys receive so the family opted to go the easy route and take the five-minute cable car ride to the top of the hill where Santorini lies. A few minutes before sunset, everyone grabs every imaginable seat in every cafe and bar overlooking the sea for the incredible sunset that takes place every night it's clear. While there were a few afternoon clouds lingering, it still didn't disappoint.
