This past Saturday, after spending the prior day in Bangkok, I ventured on a two hour van ride north to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ayutthaya. Founded in 1350, it was the second capital city of Thailand (it's now Bangkok). Within the nationally protected zone, there are many wats (temples) and immense statues of Buddha. Many of the wats were very reminiscent of my trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia last year.
The ruins are in surprisingly excellent condition considering they are nearly 1,000 years old. Following a lengthy tour of three wats, we proceeded to the royal family's summer palace for a tour for a more modern way of life as seen in the photos.
