In mid-July, my parents and I flew to Lima, Peru to spend a week exploring this fascinating and history-rich city before my sister and her family arrived to join us for excursions to the Sacred Valley, Cusco, Machu Picchu, and the Peruvian Amazon in Puerto Maldonado.
Over the course of the trip, we binged on traditional Peruvian foods like ceviche (raw fish marinated in lime juice), cuy (guinea pig), alpaca steaks, anticuchos (grilled cow hearts) and of course the world-famous Pisco Sours.
My parents flew to the Amazon jungle several days ahead of the rest of the family, while the rest of the group hiked in Ollantaytambo, the site of many Inca and pre-Inca ruins, climbed up Machu Picchu, and explored the UN World Heritage site of Cusco.
Once in Puerto Maldonado, we went night cruising to observe caiman and capybara in their natural habitat, took night walks to find an array of local insects, including tarantulas, and kayaked through Amazonian tributaries.
