Well, I finally woke up and realized it's 2008 and almost everyone has a blog except me. So, I took my lunch hour at work to set up my own blog to share my life in Buenos Aires, Argentina with anyone bored enough to want to read my rants. I'll send links to the blog out sporadically to my email distribution list, in the event readers don't save my blog to their list of favorites :)
Today's a pretty tense day here in Buenos Aires. There are two competing protests going on just a few blocks from my office. The first is the "official" demonstration supporting the President. The second is a counterprotest for those who oppose her. Why all the protests today? In a nutshell, about three months ago, the government enacted a very unpopular tax on famers that infuriated not only them, but the middle class in Buenos Aires and elsewhere. I don't think she (President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner) realized just how unpopular it would be, so in
response to the reaction, she and her party machine goons organized a serious of demonstrations recently, where they actually paid participants to march in support of the government.
Today's protests are yet another in a series of pro/anti government rallies. It's quite insane, actually. Most of the shops near my office closed at 3:00 PM in the event the protests turned violent.
