At nearly 10,000 feet above sea level, Quito is the highest capital city in the world. Unlike other high altitude cities I've been to (such as Cusco and Arequipa, Peru and La Paz, Bolivia), the people of Quito don't drink tea made from cocaine leaves, nor do they chew the leaves to cope with the altitude. Quito is a colonial city much like those of other northern Latin American countries such as Colombia and Peru. There is a quaint historical district and a modern financial district. While I spent 9 days in the city, you could easily spend just two days and see everything you need to see. It's definitely not a safe city (day or night) and you get a feel for that just walking around the city. Many of the locals are scoping you out to see if you have anything of value on your body.
