Cotopaxi - Tallest active volcano in the world

On August 16, I took a three hour car trip from Quito, Ecuadot to Cotopaxi volcano. At 19,347 feet above sea level, it's the highest active volcano in the world. We were a group of three with the tour guide and we made a valiant attempt to reach the refugio (the part where the serious hikers take the rest of the journey to the top of the volcano at 15,500 feet) but by the time we got there, we were pounded by hail, sleet and snow. Needless to say, we did the photo op (see above) before heading down. Unfortunately, cloud cover prevented us from getting any really good shots of the peak. Later, we visited a lagoon that was created after the ice age that is now a haven for bird lovers. For more photos, click here.
