After my first week back in Lima, Peru for the month of May, I took a weekend excursion 180 km south of Lima to a village called Lunahuana. I'd been here a few years back and it's a popular place for hiking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding and 4x4 trails.
After a short tour of the coastal area (Cerro Azul), the group visited a bodega to see how Peruvians make their traditional Pisco liquor, followed by a tasting and then lunch. Following lunch, those of us brave enough took to the water for a whitewater rafting excursion. They had rain the following day so it was considered a Level 2 (out of five levels) so it was not particular hard but more strenuous than I thought. By the time we arrived back at the lodge, all of us were drenched. The temperature of the water had to be no more than 45 degrees F!
Following the whitewater rafting, we changed clothes and went on a 4x4 excursion through the mountains before heading back to Lima for the three hour bus trip. All in all, it was a fun and action-packed day, definitely worth considering if you're ever in Peru.
