An hour-long train ride outside of Buenos Aires and next to the small city of Tigre sits the Delta. The Paraná River delta is a 14,000 square kilometer area where thousands of islands and inlets, water channels, rivers and backwaters form a sub-tropical wonderland just a short trip from the capital city. I took a day trip here last Saturday since the weather was extremely hot and I thought being near the river might cool things off.According to the Web, the Delta holds an important place in Argentine history. Buenos Aires had a difficult beginning, and the settlers moved from there to Tigre in the 1580’s. The fertile land drew farmers whose wheat harvests fed the growing population.Today its agricultural heritage is present in the Mercado de Frutos where one can buy produce. rustic fabric, furniture and accessories made in cane and willow, jams and honey and flowers.
After a visit to the Puerto de Frutos to buy some gifts to take with me to Salto on Sunday when i visit my friends Fernando and Patricia, I also took a boat ride through the Delta, capturing some nice photos of the summer homes of many of Buenos Aires' elite, who come here for the weekends to escape the big city, as well as many of its permanent residents. One of the photos above is of an antique home that has been turned into a museum and is covered in glass to protect it from the environment.
